Hammercote Smooth Aerosol FAQ's

Do I need to prepare the metal surface before using aerosol paint?

Clean the surface to remove dirt, grease, and oil. This should be done using Coo-Var Universal Degreaser.

Remove any existing rust using a mechanical sander or a wire brush.

Is a primer necessary when using aerosol paint on metal?

A primer is not nessacary with Coo-Var Hammercote products as it acts as a primer and a topcoat together. However if you want the added protection you can use Coo-Var All Metals Primer. All metal must be prepared correctly.

How do I avoid drips and runs when using aerosol paint?

Hold the can about 8-12 inches from the surface and use smooth, even strokes. Start and stop the spray off the surface to avoid buildup at the beginning and end of each pass. Apply several light coats rather than one heavy coat.

How long should I wait between coats of aerosol paint?

Apply a mist coat followed by a full coat after 2-4 minutes. When more than one coat is required (e.g. on rough surfaces), re-coat as soon as the first coat is dry - usually within 15 minutes. Any further coats by brush or spray should be applied as soon as possible but certainly within 4 hours after which time the Hammercote will have started the curing period. How long does aerosol paint take to cure on metal?

Can I use aerosol paint on rusted metal?

We do not recommended to paint directly over rust. Rust should be removed and any rust pittinng that can not be removed should be stabalised with Coo-Var Rust Convetor.

How do I ensure an even finish with aerosol paint?

Shake the can vigorously before use and periodically during application. Apply in thin, even coats, overlapping slightly with each pass.

What safety precautions should I take when using aerosol paint?

Use in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes. Wear a mask, gloves, and protective eyewear. Avoid open flames and high heat sources as aerosol cans are flammable.

Can aerosol paint be used outdoors?

Yes,Hammercote is formulated for outdoor use and are designed to withstand weather conditions.

How do I store aerosol paint cans?

Store aerosol cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not expose them to temperatures above 49°C to prevent the risk of explosion.

Can I touch up aerosol-painted surfaces with a brush?

While it's possible, it can be challenging to match the texture and finish of the aerosol paint. For small touch-ups, it's often better to spray a bit of paint into a cup and use a small brush, or simply reapply the aerosol paint to the affected area.
