Coo-Var Floor Paints PTV Table

Slip Resistance

Our Floor products are tested to BS7976 -2 Pendulum Slip Test. The Table gives you the risks associated with the product.

Using a rubber boot attached to a pendulum, the Pendulum test simulates a pedestrian heel striking a surface - the point at which slips are most likely to occur, and measures the friction of the surface. This measurement gives us the pendulum test value (PTV) which is used to determine the likelihood of slipping on the surface.

The preferred PTV value of a surface is 36 or more – as at this point the risk of slip is extremely unlikely.

PTV of 20 indicates a 1 in 2 probability of a slip

PTV of 24 indicates a 1 in 20 probability of a slip

PTV of 27 indicates a 1 in 200 probability of a slip

PTV of 36 indicates a 1 in 1 million probability of a slip.

The value required may differ depending on the specifier, and a higher value may be required if the surface is not level (such as an incline or ramp); is an area where pedestrian may turn; or is “high risk ” such as a swimming pool, stairs, or a sporting area.

The Pendulum test is the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) preferred method of testing, as it is portable, offers values of wet, dry and contaminated surfaces and can test in the exact area where slips may occur.
