How to Apply Pro-Netic Magnetic Chalkboard Paint to Wood and Walls

Want to create a magnetic chalkboard for your home, garage or workspace? Coo-Var Pro-Netic Water Based Magnetic Chalkboard Paint transforms suitable wooden boards and interior walls into practical surfaces for writing with chalk and displaying items with magnets.

In this guide, we'll show you how to prepare and paint both surfaces for the best results.

What You'll Need

  • Coo-Var Pro-Netic Water Based Magnetic Chalkboard Paint

  • Paintbrush

  • Fine sandpaper

  • Clean cloth

  • Suitable surface cleaner or degreaser

  • Filler and filling knife, if required for walls

  • Chalk for preparing the finished surface

How to Apply Pro-Netic to a Wooden Board

1. Prepare the Surface

Lightly sand the wooden board to remove rough patches, then remove all dust. Ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from grease or other contaminants.

For bare wood, we recommend our Stain Lock Primer system. If you're using MDF, use a suitable MDF primer.

2. Apply the Paint

Mix Pro-Netic thoroughly before use. Using a paintbrush, apply an even coat across the board, taking care to cover the edges and avoid missed areas.

Allow the paint to dry between coats, following the latest product technical data sheet.

3. Build Up the Coats

The number of coats affects magnetic performance. We would recommend four coats for lighter magnets and eight coats for stronger magnets.

Apply each coat evenly and allow sufficient drying time.

4. Prepare Your Chalkboard

Allow the paint to reach full hardness before use. Once ready, rub the side of a piece of chalk over the entire surface, then wipe it clean with a dry cloth or chalkboard eraser.

Your board is now ready for notes, shopping lists, reminders and magnetic displays.

How to Apply Pro-Netic to a Wall

1. Prepare the Wall

Remove dust, grease and loose paint. Fill any holes or cracks, allow the filler to dry, then sand smooth.

Ensure the wall is clean, dry and in good condition before painting. Prime the surface where required.

2. Apply Pro-Netic

Mix the paint thoroughly and apply an even coat with a paintbrush. If you're creating a defined chalkboard area, mark out the shape beforehand using a pencil and masking tape.

3. Apply Additional Coats

Allow each coat to dry in accordance with the product instructions. Apply four coats for lighter magnets or eight for stronger magnetic performance..

4. Allow to Dry Before Use

Allow the paint to reach full hardness before using the wall. Before writing on it, rub chalk across the entire surface and wipe it clean to prepare the chalkboard finish.

Your new magnetic chalkboard is ready for shopping lists, weekly planners, children's drawings or workshop reminders.

Top Tips for the Best Results

  • Prepare properly: Clean, dry and well-prepared surfaces help the paint adhere.

  • Apply enough coats: Additional coats improve magnetic performance.

  • Allow sufficient drying time: Follow the current technical data sheet between coats and before use.

  • Prepare the chalkboard: Rub chalk over the finished surface before writing on it.

  • Check conditions: Pro-Netic is for interior use and should not be applied when temperatures will be at or below 7°C during application and drying.
