Case Study: Garage Floor Refurbishment Using Coo-Var Acid Etch, Proseal & Profloor Plus

Project Background

A homeowner and car enthusiast wanted to transform an ageing concrete garage floor that had become dusty, stained, and difficult to maintain after years of vehicle traffic. The objective was to create a durable, easy-to-clean surface with a professional finish in order to showcase the car and bike.

The system recommended for the project was:

  • Coo-Var Oil remover to clean the surface
  • Coo-Var Acid Etch to prep the surface
  • Coo-Var Proseal High Performance Primer
  • 2 coats of Coo-Var Profloor Plus Two-Pack Epoxy Floor Paint to create a long lasting, hard wearing professional finish.

Surface Preparation

Preparation is the key to achieving a long-lasting epoxy floor finish.

The concrete floor was thoroughly cleaned with Water Based Oil Remover to remove dust, dirt, and any traces of oil contamination. Once clean, Coo-Var Acid Etch was applied to the bare concrete surface.

The etching process opens the concrete pores and creates a suitable surface profile, ensuring maximum adhesion for the primer and topcoats. After the etching process was completed, the floor was rinsed thoroughly and allowed to dry completely before the next stage commenced.

Priming the Floor

With the surface fully prepared, Coo-Var Proseal High Performance Primer was applied across the entire floor area.

The primer seals the substrate, reduces porosity, and provides an ideal surface for the epoxy coating system to bond to. Coo-Var recommends Proseal for prepared concrete surfaces prior to applying heavy-duty floor coatings.

After curing, the floor was ready for its final protective finish.

Applying Profloor Plus

The final stage involved applying two coats of Coo-Var Profloor Plus, a heavy-duty, solvent-free, two-pack epoxy floor coating designed for demanding environments. Profloor Plus offers outstanding resistance to abrasion, oil, chemicals, and vehicle traffic, making it an excellent choice for garages and workshops.

The first coat established a strong, durable base layer, while the second coat enhanced the overall finish, durability, and chemical resistance, creating a high-build protective system designed to provide years of service.

Results

The completed floor delivered a dramatic transformation.

What was previously a worn and porous concrete surface became a clean, durable, high-gloss floor with a professional showroom appearance. The new coating system not only improved the aesthetics of the garage but also provided long-term protection against tyre wear, oil spills, and everyday garage use.
