FAQs

What is Acrylic Primer Sealer?

Acrylic Primer Sealer is a water-based acrylic primer and sealer, designed to prepare surfaces before painting. It’s essentially the product that gives you a solid, even base for your topcoat

How does Acrylic Primer Sealer work?

Coo-Var Acrylic Primer Sealer works by using acrylic resins to bond to the surface and create a stable, even base for paint. As a water-based primer and sealer, it penetrates and fills porous materials like plaster, wood, or brick so the topcoat doesn’t soak in unevenly or appear patchy. It dries to a smooth, matt white film that evens out colour and texture, helping finishing coats adhere better and look more uniform. Because it’s water-based, it dries relatively quickly, has low-odour, is easy to apply with brush, roller, or spray, and can be cleaned up with water while still wet

How many coats of Acrylic Primer Sealer do I need?

One full, even coat is usually enough to prime and seal a surface before painting — provided the surface is properly prepared and the primer covers evenly. In most typical decorating jobs, one well-applied coat of this acrylic primer sealer followed by your topcoat will give good results. If in doubt, let the first coat dry and check coverage before deciding on a second

Do I need to prime the surface before applying Acrylic Primer Sealer?

No — you do not need to prime the surface before applying our Acrylic Primer Sealer. Acrylic Primer Sealer is the primer.

Can I use Acrylic Primer Sealer on any surface?

Our Acrylic Primer Sealer can be used on a range of common surfaces, but it’s not suitable for every material you might encounter. We recommend its use over the following substrates:

- Plaster

- Wood

- Concrete

- Brick

- Masonry

Is Acrylic Primer Sealer safe to use?

Yes — Coo-Var Acrylic Primer Sealer is generally safe to use as it is water-based and low-odour

Can Acrylic Primer Sealer go over previously painted surfaces?

Yes it can, but proper preparation is important to ensure good adhesion and a smooth finish (e.g. cleaning the surface and lightly abrading to provide a suitable key for adhesion)

Can I repaint over Acrylic Primer Sealer?

You can repaint over our Acrylic Primer Sealer as long as it
is fully dry and cured. Before painting, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth any imperfections and wipe away the dust. The primer is compatible with both water-based (acrylic) and most solvent-based paints, but make sure it’s completely cured if using solvent-based topcoats.
Apply the paint in thin, even layers—usually two coats are ideal—and avoid painting over wet primer or skipping the sanding step to ensure good adhesion and a smooth finish.

Does Acrylic Primer Sealer come in different colours?

No, this would only be available in white

What maintenance is required?

Once Coo-Var Acrylic Primer Sealer has been
applied and overcoated with your topcoat, it requires no special maintenance itself. The key is to care for the painted surface by cleaning it gently with a soft cloth and mild, non-abrasive cleaner, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive tools, and promptly touching up any chips or scratches to prevent damage
reaching the substrate. If you ever need to repaint, lightly sand the existing surface to help the new paint adhere, then clean and repaint as usual. Any leftover primer should be stored in a cool, dry place with the lid tightly sealed
