What is Coo-Var Ebony Black?
This is a specialist black paint designed to give a classic black finish with a low sheen finish for decorative and protective application
How does Coo-Var Ebony Black work?
It is formulated to give that deep black, slightly shiny “ebony” look while also protecting the surface underneath
How many coats of Coo-Var Ebony Black do I need?
We would advise on two coats for an effective system, but a third coat can be applied to achieve an extra rich surface
Do I need to prime the surface before applying Coo-Var Ebony Black?
This is, of course, subjective to the substrate being painted:
- Wood: Direct to well-prepared surface
- Concrete: Direct to well-prepared surface
- Masonry: Direct to well-prepared surface
- Metal: Coo-Var Zinc Phosphate Primer
Is Coo-Var Ebony Black safe to use?
Yes — it is safe to use, but only if you follow proper safety precautions typical for solvent-based paints. It’s not hazardous in normal decorative use, but it does contain solvents
that can pose health and safety risks if directly inhaled or handled incorrectly
Can Coo-Var Ebony Black go over previously painted surfaces?
Yes, but the surface must be well prepared. This generally involves removing any loose/flaking previous coatings, lightly abrading the remaining sound/stable previous paint and ensuring the surface is clean and free from any dust or debris.
Depending on the type of substrate, only bare areas (as a result of loose/flaking previous coating being removed) should be spot-primed before applying our Ebony Black
Can I repaint over Coo-Var Ebony Black?
Yes. Both solvent-based and water-based paints can go over this, but its surface will need to be cleaned, have any loose/flaking paint removed, and sound/stable coatings will need to be lightly abraded first.
Does Coo-Var Ebony Black come in different colours?
No, this product is specifically designed in black only
What maintenance is required?
You should periodically wipe it clean with a soft cloth or mild soapy water and inspect for cracks, chips, or peeling. Minor damage can be touched up with another thin coat
