How to Create a Heavy-Duty Garage Floor Flake Finish with ProFloor Plus Epoxy Floor Paint

How to Create a Heavy-Duty Garage Floor Flake Finish with ProFloor Plus Epoxy Floor Paint

A professionally coated garage floor doesn't just look impressive—it provides long-term protection against oils, chemicals, tyre marks, and everyday wear and tear. As part of a wider range of high-performance floor paints, the combination of Dampshield Primer, ProFloor Plus, decorative flakes and PolyGuard topcoat creates a durable, showroom-quality finish built to withstand years of heavy use.

Here's how to transform your garage floor into a tough, attractive flake-finished surface.

This proven system uses specialist two-pack epoxy floor coatings to deliver exceptional durability, chemical resistance and long-term performance on concrete floors in garages, workshops and industrial environments.

Step 1: Clean and Degrease the Floor

Preparation is everything when it comes to floor coatings. Start by thoroughly cleaning the concrete surface with our universal degreaser, this removing dirt, oil stains, and any contaminants that could affect adhesion.

Once the floor is clean, it's time for the acid etch.

Step 2: Acid Etch the Concrete

Acid etching removes dust, laitance, and weak surface material while creating a chemical key that allows the coating system to bond effectively with the concrete.

Apply the acid evenly across the entire floor using a plastic watering can, ensuring complete coverage.

After the acid has done its job, rinse the floor thoroughly to remove all residue. Don't rush this stage—proper rinsing is essential for a successful installation.

Allow the floor to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Apply Dampshield Primer

Dampshield Primer creates the perfect foundation for the coating system.

Before mixing:

  • Stir the base component thoroughly.
  • Stir the hardener separately.
  • Combine both components and mix thoroughly using an electric drill paddle.

Pour the mixed primer directly onto the floor and spread evenly with a short-pile roller.

Be aware that the primer has a pot life of approximately 20 minutes, so work efficiently once mixed.

Allow the primer to cure for 16 hours before continuing.

Step 4: Apply ProFloor Plus

Once the primer has cured, tape along the bottom of the walls to achieve clean edges and make cutting in easier.

Prepare ProFloor Plus by:

  • Stirring the base component.
  • Stirring the hardener separately.
  • Mixing both parts together thoroughly.

You'll have approximately 15–20 minutes of working time, so plan your application carefully.

Using a short-pile roller, apply the coating evenly across the floor, maintaining a consistent finish throughout.

At this stage, your floor already has a durable, hard-wearing epoxy finish and can be left as it is if a solid colour floor is your preferred look. Decorative flakes and a PolyGuard topcoat are optional additions if you're looking to achieve a professional showroom-style appearance with enhanced durability and long-term resistance to wear, chemicals and tyre marks.

Step 5: Broadcast Decorative Flakes

For that professional showroom appearance, decorative flakes should be applied while the ProFloor Plus coating is still wet.

Wear spiked shoes so you can safely walk across the freshly coated floor without leaving marks.

Broadcast the flakes evenly to achieve your desired level of coverage.

Allow the floor to cure for at least 16 hours before vacuuming away any excess flakes or loose material.

Step 6: Seal with PolyGuard Topcoat

The final stage is applying PolyGuard, a highly durable topcoat designed to provide enhanced resistance to:

  • Oils
  • Chemicals
  • Abrasion
  • Daily vehicle traffic

As before:

  • Stir both components separately.
  • Mix thoroughly together.
  • Apply within the recommended working time.

Using a short-pile roller, apply an even coat across the entire floor, encapsulating the decorative flakes and creating a smooth, hard-wearing finish.

Step 7: Allow Full Cure

Patience pays off.

Although the floor will begin to harden quickly, allow 5–7 days for the system to fully cure and reach maximum durability.

The Finished Result

By following this proven system of acid etching, Dampshield Primer, ProFloor Plus, decorative flakes, and PolyGuard topcoat, you'll create a stunning garage floor that's as tough as it is attractive.

The result is a seamless, heavy-duty coating that not only transforms the appearance of your garage but also provides years of protection against heavy traffic, chemicals, and everyday wear.

A true showroom-quality finish built to last.
